8 ultimate tips for
your visit to Venice
1. The Art of
"Getting Lost"
If you come to Venice, the first and perhaps most important tip I can give you is to intentionally get lost. Venice is a labyrinth of alleys, bridges, and small squares. Instead of stubbornly following a map, let yourself drift. Follow a cat, a melody, or simply your curiosity. It's precisely in these unexpected corners that you'll find the most authentic Venetian moments: a small, hidden bakery, a local artisan shop, or a quiet canal uncrowded by tourists. The heart of Venice beats off the beaten track.
2. Choosing the Right Gondola
A gondola ride is a must, but it can also be expensive. My tip: Share a gondola with other travelers or book one in advance. Prices are usually fixed, but the experience varies. I recommend planning the ride in the early morning or late evening to enjoy the romance and magical lights of Venice. The gondoliers, masters of their craft, are often storytellers and singers—a bonus that makes the ride even more memorable.
3. Venice Beyond the Bustle: Exploring the Islands
Venice isn't just the main island! The lagoon is home to a wealth of often-overlooked gems. A visit to the islands of Murano, Burano, and Torcello is a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle. Murano is famous for its glasswork, Burano enchants with its colorful houses and lace, and Torcello, the oldest inhabited island in the lagoon, exudes an almost mystical tranquility. Take the vaporetto, the public water bus system, to discover these treasures. It's an inexpensive and authentic way to explore the lagoon.
4. Culinary Discoveries: Avoid Tourist Traps
Venice's culinary scene can be overwhelming. To enjoy an authentic meal, avoid the restaurants right by St. Mark's Square or Rialto. I've found my best meals in the small "bàcari" (Venetian wine bars), where you can sample "cicchetti" – small, delicious bites similar to Spanish tapas. Order a glass of wine and enjoy the atmosphere. This is true Venetian food culture!
5. Venice on Foot: Choosing the Right Shoes
This point may sound trivial, but it's crucial. Venice is a city to be explored on foot. You'll cross countless bridges and walk on uneven cobblestones. Forget high heels and choose comfortable shoes. Your feet will thank you, especially after a long day of exploring.
6. The Importance of "Acqua Alta"
If you're traveling to Venice in the fall or winter, be prepared for the phenomenon of "Acqua Alta" (high water). St. Mark's Square can flood, and walkways are built. Instead of seeing this as an obstacle, embrace it as a unique opportunity. Observe how the city deals with this natural phenomenon and appreciate the square's magical, reflective surface. It's part of the Venetian identity.
7. Vaporetto Instead of Water Taxi
Water taxis are fast and private, but also extremely expensive. The vaporetto is the backbone of public transportation in Venice. It's a wonderful way to see the city from the water, observe the locals, and save money. A day ticket is often the best option, as it allows unlimited rides and gives you the freedom to explore the lagoon and its islands.
8. Souvenirs with Soul: Support Local Artisans
Forget the cheap, Chinese-made masks and plastic gondolas. Venice is home to countless artisans. Look for workshops that handcraft masks, glass artists who create unique pieces, or cobblers who make traditional Venetian shoes called "furlane." When you buy a souvenir, support local artisans and take home a piece of the true Venetian soul.
